Weeton Camp receives donation from United Utilities to aid community clean up efforts
Volunteers at Weeton Camp have received a welcome boost to their litter picking initiatives thanks to an equipment donation from United Utilities’ Community Fund.
Weeton Camp, a British army base, near Blackpool has a community development team who work hard to take care of the area’s surrounding environment. The camp is situated between the River Wyre and River Ribble, with volunteers from the camp dedicating their free time to picking litter from the woodland and along the brooks.
This summer, United Utilities donated litter picking sets to Weeton Camp, along with some child-friendly equipment for the younger members of the group, who make up a significant number of the volunteering team.
Rachel Day, Community Development Worker on Weeton Camp, commented: “As part of my role with the military families on base, I deliver a variety of events and clubs. One of which is litter picking, where we target the surrounding woodland areas as well as the waterways. It’s great to see the children eager to make a difference too – its helping them learn from a young age that they’re also responsible for protecting our environment.
Rachel continues: “We are blessed to have an abundance of nature here at Weeton Camp and we will continue to work with the community to protect and maintain these nature spots that we’re lucky to have on our doorstep.”
Iain Pilling, Area Engagement Lead for Lancashire at United Utilities, added: “We’re proud to support Weeton Camp’s efforts to improving their local environment. Litter picking does more than improve the appearance of the outdoors: it also helps stop blockages and protects wildlife and our rivers by removing hazards like entanglement and ingestion risks.
“It’s great to see such committed local action, and we look forward to seeing the difference that the dedicated team at Weeton Camp make.”
