Water company volunteers dig in to keep school garden growing

Water company volunteers went back to school to help get the garden growing.

A team of volunteers from United Utilities and their contract partner GDB Civils spent the day at Brennand’s Endowed Primary School in Slaidburn to update the garden and outdoor reflection area.

As well as creating new raised planters, the team also gave the fences and shed a lick of paint and installed a water butt to enable the school to collect and use rainwater to keep the plants thriving in a sustainable way.

Organiser of the day Matthew Postlethwaite from United Utilities said: “We’ve developed a great relationship with the school and when we heard that the garden was in need of an update, a few of us got to together to donate our time and some equipment.

“We were also pleased to install a water butt. It will help the school harvest lovely, free rainwater which is known to be the best option for keeping plants flourishing.”

Sarah White, Head Teacher at Brennand’s Endowed CE School said: “The garden was in need of a make-over and it came just at the right time as the school gardening club is hoping to enter the Hodder Valley Show later this year – this is a big help.”
