United Utilities to upgrade more than 3km of Burnley’s water network

United Utilities is investing more than £945,000 in a project to upgrade more than 3km of Burnley’s water mains.

The majority of work is being carried out in Cliviger where a four-month project to upgrade almost 3km is set to get underway on January 5th. It will see ageing water mains replaced with new pipeline that is designed to last more than 100 years.

The projects Are part of United Utilities £380m programme to upgrade more than 925km of water mains across the North West during the next five years. More than 160km of these are in Lancashire.

In Cliviger, work is being carried out in phases in roads in the Towneley Park area including Todmorden Road and Rock Lane. Where possible the work will be carried out using a trenchless method where new pipeline is inserted inside the old. This reduces the need for extensive excavations and keeps disruption to a minimum.

A smaller project along Todmorden Road, Briercliffe is also being carried out in January. A temporary road closure and diversion will be in place while the work is delivered. Access to properties will be maintained.

The replacement mains are built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations to help protect against burst and reduce leaks.

United Utilities is notifying customers in areas where work is taking place to let them know about the work. They are also reminding customers that all United Utilities’ employees and contract partners carry ID cards and will be happy to have their identity checked. If in doubt, customers should call 0345 672 3723.

Stephen Walker who heads up Water Services for United Utilities in Lancashire explained: “The improvements we are delivering across Lancashire will make the water network in the county more resilient. These replacement mains are built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations which will help protect against burst.

“This work will play an important role in helping us deliver a reliable water supply to customers for decades to come.”

“We know this type of work can be disruptive and we are doing all we can to keep that to a minimum.”

Contract partner Network Plus is carrying out the work on behalf of United Utilities. More information is available online at www.unitedutilities.com/new-water-pipes.
