United Utilities to host drop-in event about plans to improve water quality around Barrow

United Utilities is offering the public the chance to find out more about its plans to improve water quality around Barrow.

The company is proposing to build a new 5,500m3 storage tank at a site off Flass Lane in the town.  The tank, bigger than two Olympic sized swimming pools, will cut the number of times that nine storm overflows in the town operate during periods of heavy rainfall.

The tank is designed to provide storage for the nine overflows in a single location to help reduce disruption across the wider community.

The company will also be carrying out surface water disconnections between the South Newbarns and Roose Gate areas to improve network efficiency.  Work is expected to start in late 2025 and be completed in 2027.

The North West’s water company will be transforming the water and wastewater infrastructure across the North West with the largest investment in a century.

Further projects to tackle another 12 storm overflows across Barrow will also be completed in the next five years.

Residents are being encouraged to find out more at a drop-in event being held on 1 July, between 2pm and 7pm at Beacon Hill Methodist Church, Holyoake Avenue, Barrow-in-Furness, LA13 9LH.
