The North West's water company is working with Alder Hey Hospital on a £536,000 scheme to reduce flooding in Deysbrook, Liverpool.

United Utilities is powering ahead with investment both at the hospital and in the surrounding area by disconnecting rainwater pipes from the combined sewer network and reconnecting them to new surface water sewers.

Jonathon Milward, from the company’s Rainwater Management Team explained the benefits: “We’re constructing a new surface water sewer which will keep rainwater out of the wastewater network and divert it away from areas at risk of flooding.”

Alder Hey has contributed £107,000 to the project, with United Utilities funding the remaining £429,000.

The first part of the works began early this year on Alder Road. Subsequent works are due to start on 16 March, and will see the construction of a new surface water sewer and manholes at the junction of Agincourt Road, and Sibford Road. The works are expected to complete within six weeks.  During this time a temporary road closure will be in place on Agincourt Road.

Jonathon Milward, added:  “This project highlights our commitment to investing in key infrastructure in Liverpool, while working closely with key partners to deliver sustainable rainwater management solutions and improve overall water quality in the Liverpool City Region.”

It comes as United Utilities is making great progress on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure in the North West for a century.  The company is spending more than £13bn to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters whilst safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.
