United Utilities invites residents to find out more about £30m scheme in Wavertree Park

20 Jan 2026

United Utilities is inviting residents to find out more details about a £30m scheme in Wavertree Park, Liverpool that will help reduce flooding in the local area.

The underground tank will hold 7 million litres of rainwater - that’s the equivalent of three Olympic sized swimming pools.

United Utilities is working with Liverpool City Council to ensure as much access to the park as possible is maintained for the public during the construction works.  The tank is due to be completed, and the section of park reinstated, in 2028.

All construction activity will take place within a temporary and secure fenced area and a new entrance off Grant Avenue into the working area will also be created.

The temporary site compound area will provide site offices/team welfare facilities and storage areas for machinery and excavated materials.

On Thursday 22 January, members of the project team will be available to speak to residents and answer questions about the work planned in Wavertree Park. They will be available at Elm Hall Drive Methodist Church Hall, Liverpool, L18 1LE from 3pm until 7pm.

Mark Booth, United Utilities Area Engagement Lead – Merseyside, said: “This project is essential for helping to improve the flood risk in Liverpool, particularly around well used local amenities and areas of high footfall – something we know that the local community cares deeply about.  We understand that any disruption is frustrating, but we are committed to working with stakeholders in the local area to minimise this as best we can.”

The investment comes as United Utilities embarks on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a century.

The company will be spending more than £13bn over the next five years to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters whilst safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.
