United Utilities invests in Glenridding wastewater improvements to improve water quality in Ullswater

A trial is starting at Glenridding Wastewater Treatment Works that will help to improve water quality in Ullswater.

United Utilities is improving the quality of the treated wastewater that is returned to the environment and increasing capacity at the works to reduce the number of times that the storm overflow operates.

The improvements will also help ensure the treatment works can support new housing developments in the area and will deliver immediate environmental benefits whilst helping to inform a permanent solution that will be installed by 2030.

Andrew Kendall, Wastewater Business Lead for Cumbria at United Utilities, said: "Protecting and improving water quality in Ullswater is a priority for us. These improvements will deliver immediate environmental benefits while helping us develop the best long-term solution for Glenridding.

“The trial will provide important data to support future investment and ensure the treatment works continues to meet increasing environmental standards as well as supporting new housing growth in the area.”

It comes as United Utilities continues to make progress on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a century. The company is investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers across the North West.
