Near Sawrey residents invited to find out more about plans to improve water quality

United Utilities is inviting residents to find out more about plans to improve water quality in Wilfin Beck and help reduce pressure on the local sewer network in Near Sawrey.

The North West's water company is proposing two sustainable drainages (SuDS) schemes that will divert rainwater away from the sewer network and manage it more naturally.

The plans include a new surface water sewer along Stones Lane and within the field opposite Hill Top, the creation of a swale to store and manage rainwater, and modifications to an existing dry-stone wall to create a flood wall.

The scheme will help reduce the amount of surface water entering the sewer network, reducing the number of times the local storm overflow operates during heavy rainfall and improving water quality in Wilfin Beck.

Residents are invited to attend a drop-in event on Thursday 17 September, from 4pm to 7pm, at Sawrey House, Near Sawrey, Ambleside LA22 0LF.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet members of the project team, view the proposals and ask questions about the plans.

The Near Sawrey scheme forms part of United Utilities' £200 million programme of investment across the Windermere catchment over the next four years to reduce storm overflow operations and improve the quality of treated wastewater, helping to protect and enhance one of the UK's most iconic lakes and its surrounding watercourses.

It comes as United Utilities continues to make progress on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a century. The company is investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers across the North West.
