United Utilities donates to Friends of Tawd Valley to support local conservation efforts

United Utilities has provided an equipment donation to Skelmersdale community group, Friends of the Tawd Valley, to support their work in maintaining Tawd Valley Park and the River Tawd.

Friends of Tawd Valley (FoTV) is a community group run by volunteers who are passionate about the nature and wildlife they have on their doorstep. The aim of the group is to promote and improve the usage of the natural assets of Tawd Valley and encourage biodiversity in the area.

FoTV also has a group for under 12s called the Kingfisher Club, which instils the importance of looking after the local environment in its members from a young age.

One of the group’s main activities is balsam bashing on the river, however the group found themselves struggling to provide members with the correct equipment to carry out the task safely and effectively. Balsam bashing is the main method of non-chemical control for Himalayan balsam and is typically the most effective approach for its removal - it involves removing the plants by hand before they flower and set seed.

Keen to support the group and their efforts, United Utilities provided the group with essential items such as PPE, waders, safety glasses, wellington boots, wheelbarrows, and cutting tools, so that volunteers can continue their vital work.

Elaine Brookes, a volunteer of Friends of Tawd Valley, said: “A heartfelt thank you to United Utilities for their incredible generosity.

“We were thrilled to have received the fantastic delivery of tools and equipment, all funded by United Utilities Community Fund.  This donation will make a huge difference in our efforts to protect and enhance the River Tawd. Every piece of equipment will be put to great use by our dedicated volunteers.  It is partnerships like this that help us make a real and lasting impact on our environment.”

Derek Briggs, Wastewater Catchment Manager for Merseyside at United Utilities, commented: “At United Utilities, we know that thriving green spaces like Tawd Valley Park are key to both community wellbeing and environmental resilience. We’re proud to support the Friends of Tawd Valley in their efforts to protect and enhance this valuable local resource. By working together, we can help promote regeneration, litter picking, and create a healthier environment for everyone.”
