United Utilities announces next phase of consultation for Haweswater catchment plans
United Utilities is inviting residents to a second round of consultation events to find out more about proposed environmental improvements across the Haweswater catchment.
At Blea Water, United Utilities is proposing to remove old infrastructure, including a disused weir and pipework, to return the site to a more natural state and improve the environment. The infrastructure was previously used as part of its water supply network.
Around Haweswater Reservoir, proposals include the removal of around 15 hectares of ageing conifer woodland, which would be replaced with native species such as oak, birch and rowan. The current trees are becoming increasingly vulnerable to wind damage and disease, and also pose an increased wildfire risk.
The plans have been developed with input from a number of organisations, including the Environment Agency, Natural England and the RSPB.
Residents are invited to attend events at Bampton Memorial Hall:
- Friday 16 October 2026, 2pm to 7pm
- Saturday 17 October 2026, 10am to 2pm
The events will provide an opportunity for people to learn more about the proposals, speak directly with members of the project team and share their views.
United Utilities expects to submit planning applications and forestry plans to the relevant authorities over the winter.
