Eccles sewer project reaches key milestone as flood resilience improvements completed

United Utilities has completed an important milestone in its work to reduce the risk of flooding in Eccles.

Over the summer, teams have worked along Peel Green Road to install an additional sewer designed to help reduce the risk of flooding for local homes and businesses.

The new sewer has now been connected into the existing network and is fully operational, with wastewater flowing through the new pipework to Eccles wastewater treatment works and the road has fully reopened to traffic following completion of the work.

The project forms a part of United Utilities' wider £300 million investment programme in Eccles, which will help improve river water quality and increase resilience across the wastewater network.

The next stage of the programme will continue at Eccles Wastewater Treatment Works, where United Utilities is carrying out a major upgrade that will include new stormwater storage capacity and improvements to the treatment process. The investment will help reduce storm overflow discharges by capturing and storing flows during periods of heavy rainfall before returning them for treatment, while also improving the quality of the treated wastewater that is returned to the environment.

Jim Scholes, Delivery Manager at United Utilities, said:  "It's great to reach another key milestone and see the new sewer brought into operation. We'd like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience while this work has been taking place.

“The improvements we're making will help create a more resilient wastewater network for the future, reducing flood risk and helping us reduce spills.  We're now focused on the major upgrade at Eccles wastewater treatment works which will deliver further benefits for the local environment."

United Utilities is investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance more than 500 kilometres of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers across the North West.
