Grasmere upgrade delivers early environmental benefits

27 Oct 2026

Customers and the environment are already benefiting from improved wastewater treatment standards in Grasmere after United Utilities completed a major upgrade at the village's wastewater treatment works years ahead of its regulatory deadline.

The project, delivered as part of the company's ongoing £200 million investment programme across the Windermere catchment, has upgraded systems and equipment at Grasmere wastewater treatment works, enabling the site to achieve an enhanced treatment standard of 0.25mg/l phosphorus.

This upgraded treatment process removes more phosphorus from wastewater before it is returned to the environment, helping to protect local rivers and watercourses and supporting the long-term health of the wider catchment.

Phosphorus occurs naturally in the environment but can contribute to water quality challenges when present in excessive amounts. By reducing phosphorus levels in treated wastewater, the upgraded works will help protect the local water environment and support the long-term health of nearby watercourses.

Importantly, the work has been completed almost four years ahead of the regulatory compliance date of March 2030, meaning the environmental benefits are being delivered much sooner than required.

By completing this upgrade ahead of schedule, customers can have confidence that investment is already delivering tangible improvements and helping to create a healthier environment for future generations.

The scheme is the latest milestone in United Utilities' commitment to improving water quality across the Windermere catchment through its record £200 million investment programme. Alongside improvements at nine of the wastewater treatment works in the catchment, the company is continuing to work at pace to deliver a range of projects aimed at reducing spills and protecting some of the region's most treasured landscapes.

Katie Callan, Windermere Delivery Director said:

"We're delighted to have completed this important project at Grasmere well ahead of schedule. Achieving these higher treatment standards almost four years before they were required means the environmental benefits are being delivered sooner, helping to protect the local area while demonstrating our commitment to investing in the future of the Windermere catchment."
