Staveley residents invited to public exhibition as further plans confirmed for water quality improvements

26 Feb 2026

United Utilities is offering the public the chance to find out more about the next stages of its plans to continue improving water quality around Staveley.

Work started in January at its wastewater treatment works as part of plans to improve water quality in the River Kent.  New storage tanks will be created to reduce the number of times that storm overflows operate during heavy rain.  There will also be new equipment installed to increase the capacity of the works.

Plans have also now been confirmed for new pipes to be laid under the River Kent and for a scheme to remove surface water from the sewer network in Staveley village near Brow Lane with work expected to start in the village from Spring.

This will help to continue to improve water quality in the River Kent and will build on work already carried out in 2025.  The North West’s water company has already increased the capacity of its treatment works by 50% and has re-lined nearly 400m of pipes to stop infiltration into the sewer network.

Residents are being encouraged to find out more at a drop-in event being held on Wednesday 4 March at Staveley Village Institute between 4-7pm.

It comes as United Utilities is making great progress on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a century.  The company is spending more than £13bn to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters whilst safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.
