Second phase of upgrade to Samlesbury’s water network gets underway
The second phase of a project to upgrade more than 7km of water mains in Samlesbury is set to get underway.
It is part of United Utilities £380m programme to upgrade more than 925km of water mains across the North West during the next five years. More than 160km of these will be in Lancashire.
The replacement mains are designed to last more than 100 years and are built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations which helps protect against bursts and reduce leaks.
The first phase was completed earlier in the year when more than 3.5km of mains were upgraded. Now the second phase to renew almost 1.3km is set to start at the end of July.
It has been planned to take place during the school summer holidays to help keep disruption to a minimum.
Work is being carried out along Nabs Head Lane from the junction with Further Lane up to Preston New Road. Access will be maintained for properties along Nabs Head Lane and all other roads will remain open, a signed diversion will be in place.
A final phase of works on Preston New Road will complete the project with the renewal of a further 2.3km of pipeline.
Stephen Walker who heads up Water Services for United Utilities in Lancashire explained: “We are now one year into our five-year programme to upgrade more than 160km of water mains across Lancashire and we are making good progress.
“The new pipes we are installing are much more durable and will play an important role in ensuring we can continue to deliver safe and reliable water supplies to customers."
United Utilities is notifying customers in areas to let them know about the work. They are also reminding customers that all United Utilities’ employees and contract partners carry ID cards and will be happy to have their identity checked. If in doubt, customers should call 0345 672 3723.
