More projects to upgrade the water network across Greater Manchester are being delivered by United Utilities.

The water company is investing more than £3.4m to deliver a further 15 projects to reduce leaks and bursts by replacing ageing water mains.  Projects are being delivered across Greater Manchester in Gorton, Blackley, Salford, Stockport, Oldham and Stalybridge.

The projects are part of United Utilities’ £380m programme to upgrade 925km of water mains during the next five years. More than 200km of these are across Greater Manchester.

The replacement mains are built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations to help protect against burst and reduce leaks.

  • In Salford, almost 1.5km of new mains are being installed in residential areas off Manchester Road in Worlsey.

  • In Gorton, more than 1.7km of mains are being replaced in residential streets off Hyde Road.

  • Almost 2.5km of new mains are being installed in the Haverfield Road area of Blackley.

  • In Oldham, 1.7km of new mains are being installed on a section of Milnrow Road and some of the residential streets in the area.

  • Just over 1km of new mains are due to be installed in residential streets to the south of Didsbury Road in Stockport.

  • Smaller projects are also taking place in Levenshulme , Trafford and Salford and all are due to be completed before Christmas.
  • More than 2.3km of mains are also being upgraded in Stalybridge in residential streets off Mottram Old Road and work will be completed in early January.

Liam Garvey from United Utilities’ water services team in Greater Manchester explained: “The new mains are stronger and more resilient as they are designed to withstand greater fluctuations in temperature and higher pressures. They are expected to last more than 100 years and will play an important role in making our water network more robust and help us deliver a reliable water supply to customers for decades to come.”

United Utilities has notified customers in areas where work is taking place. They are also reminding customers that all United Utilities’ employees and contract partners carry ID cards and will be happy to have their identity checked. If in doubt, customers should call 0345 672 3723.

Liam Garvey added: “We know this type of work can be disruptive and we are doing all we can to keep that to a minimum.”
