Major upgrade in Glenridding’s water network set to get underway
United Utilities is investing more than £2m to upgrade water mains in Glenridding.
The project is being carried out to improve the resilience and reliability of the water network in the area by protecting against leaks and bursts. It is being delivered as part of United Utilities’ £380m region-wide mains renewal program which will see more than 925km of mains upgraded by 2030.
More than 200km of these will be in Cumbria.
In total, 5.3km of new mains will be introduced. The work has been divided into phases to avoid impact on the tourist season in the Ullswater village. The first phase will begin on March 3rd and be completed by Easter. This will see mains upgraded along a section of the A592 and in residential areas including Greenside Road.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place on the A592 while work is carried out on the stretch from the Inn on the Lake through to the Ullswater Inn. Access to all homes and businesses will be maintained.
Paul Forshaw, United Utilities’ County Business lead for Water in Cumbria explained: “This is an important project that will make our water network more robust ensuring we can deliver a reliable water supply to customers for decades to come. These new mains are designed to withstand high pressure and temperature variations and are designed to last more than 100 years. They will help reduce the risks of leaks and bursts in the future.
“We have worked closely with the local community to plan our works to co-ordinate with other activities taking place in Glenridding and we have broken it up into phases to avoid the tourist season.”
Contract partners M Group will carry out the work. Customers in the area have been notified and United Utilities is reminding customers that all United Utilities’ employees and contract partners carry ID cards and will be happy to have their identity checked. If in doubt, customers should call 0345 672 3723.
