Geography students learn about ‘green jobs’ at visit to United Utilities
United Utilities hosted a group of Year 10 geography students from Rochdale for a 'green careers in action' day.
100 students from Hollingworth Academy met with United Utilities colleagues at its headquarters in Warrington to learn about the different roles across the organisation.
In collaboration with Business In The Community - a charity which brings together businesses to deliver positive economic, social and environmental change - the event included presentations from senior leaders about their education and career journey so far, and their top tips for young people.
The students also took part in a speed networking session where they put their questions to the team and were given demonstrations of River Ranger water sampling and equipment for detecting and fixing leaks on the network.
The aim of the day was to connect the geography curriculum with careers in a real-world setting, and to inspire the future generation.
Students also learned about the company’s approach to sustainability in its operations and wider strategy, digital innovation, and explored how their GCSE geography course links directly to real-life challenges and opportunities.
Tanker Driver Chris Lockett also gave them a tour of an electrical HGV!
Cate Calveley, Careers Leader at Hollingworth Academy said: "These kinds of encounters don’t just raise aspirations, they deepen understanding and bring the curriculum to life in meaningful, memorable ways."
Chris Minogue from Business in the Community said: "I'd like to thank United Utilities for arranging such a meaningful visit. I spoke to the youngsters on my coach back and there was so much positive conversation about the event from the students and teachers."
Shy Bayly, Area Engagement Lead at United Utilities added: "I sit on the Rochdale Board for Business in the Community as part of my role in Greater Manchester, and I was proud to be able to give something back by hosting an immersive session with students.
"It was also brilliant to raise awareness of the diverse and great work we do to enhance and protect the environment at UU, so hopefully we've encouraged some talented young people to consider a career with us in future!”
