Crummock consultation

United Utilities has announced plans for a series of consultation events for residents to find out about its future plans for Crummock Water, Chapelhouse reservoir and Overwater.

The North West water company has built a new pipeline to provide West Cumbria with a more resilient supply of water from Thirlmere.  The first customers were switched over in July with all other customers expected to be connected by the end of the year.

Once all customers are supplied by Thirlmere water, United Utilities will stop taking water from Crummock Water, Chapelhouse reservoir and Overwater.

The company is carrying out investigations, surveys and detailed designs to develop the most appropriate long-term plans for the sites. The public is being asked for their views on plans for returning these water bodies back to nature.

United Utilities will be hosting three drop-in events on:

  • Tuesday 11 October between 1pm – 7pm: The Wave Centre, Irish Street, Maryport, CA15 8AD
  • Wednesday 12 October between 1pm – 6pm: The Carnegie Theatre & Arts Centre, Finkle Street, Workington, CA14 2BD
  • Thursday 13 October between 1pm – 7pm: The Kirkgate Centre, Kirkgate, Cockermouth, CA13 9PJ

Subject to planning permission, work is likely to begin in 2025/26.  Plans for Ennerdale are being drawn up separately and will be shared when available.
