Appleby residents invited to public exhibition about planned River Eden water quality improvements

United Utilities is inviting residents to find out more about plans to improve water quality in the River Eden through upgrades to wastewater infrastructure in Appleby.

The North West’s water company is planning improvements to the storm overflow at the junction of Holme Street and Chapel Street. The scheme will increase storm water storage capacity and enhance the local sewer network, helping the system cope more effectively during periods of heavy rainfall.

The proposed work includes replacing the existing storm overflow chamber with a larger storage tank and upsizing part of the sewer network to provide additional capacity. Together, these improvements will help reduce the number of times the storm overflow operates during heavy rainfall, supporting ongoing efforts to improve water quality in the River Eden.

To safely deliver the project, temporary road closures and traffic management measures will be needed while work is carried out.

Residents are being encouraged to find out more at a drop-in event taking place on Wednesday 5 August in The Bennett Room at Appleby Hub between 3.30pm and 6.30pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet members of the project team, view the plans and ask questions about the proposed works.

It comes as United Utilities continues to make progress on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a century. The company is investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers across the North West.
