United Utilities invites residents to learn more about investment across Whitehaven

United Utilities is inviting residents to find out more about two major infrastructure projects planned for Whitehaven that will improve the resilience of both the town's wastewater and drinking water networks for decades to come.

The North West water company is planning improvements to a 900m section of pipeline that carries wastewater from West Strand Pumping Station to Whitehaven Wastewater Treatment Works.

The scheme help reduce the risk of bursts and disruption to the local community.  Work is due to take three months and is expected to start in Autumn subject to the necessary approvals. 

United Utilities would like to clarify that this project is not connected to the discoloured water that has recently been observed in Whitehaven Harbour.

Alongside the wastewater improvements, United Utilities is also investing in Whitehaven's drinking water network through a mains replacement programme.

The scheme will see 1.5km of water mains upgraded across the town centre, helping to improve the resilience of drinking water supplies and ensure customers continue to receive a reliable service for decades to come.

Work is currently planned to take place in the new year and customers will be contacted directly ahead of any work happening in their area.

Residents can find out more about both projects at a drop-in event on 7 September from 2pm to 7pm at The Beacon Portal on West Strand, Whitehaven.  Visitors will have the opportunity to meet members of the project team, learn more about the proposals and ask questions about the planned works.

The projects form part of United Utilities' largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure in more than a century. The company is investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers across the North West.
