Residents invited to learn more about proposed changes at Chapelhouse Reservoir and Overwater
United Utilities is inviting residents to a drop-in event to learn more about proposed environmental improvements at Chapelhouse Reservoir and Overwater in Cumbria.
The proposals would involve changes to existing water infrastructure that is no longer required for water supply purposes, helping to restore rivers and streams to a more natural state and improving habitats for wildlife.
At Chapelhouse Reservoir, plans currently include removing the dam and water supply infrastructure including the pump house, spillway channel, overflow pond and abstraction tower and replacing the existing bridge in the same location, whilst retaining the existing public right of way.
At Overwater, plans currently include removing the existing weir and embankment, as well as realigning a short section of White Beck where it meets the River Ellen together with works to realign the River Ellen through Stockdale Farm.
Residents can find out more about the proposals and speak with members of the project team at a public drop-in event. The event will be held at the WI Hall in Ireby on Wednesday 7 October 2026, from 2pm to 7pm.
United Utilities expects to submit planning applications in the coming months and subject to approvals, work could begin in 2027.
