Knutsford residents invited to hear about work at Moor Pool
United Utilities is inviting Knutsford residents to find out more about a project to enhance Moor Pool.
Work to remove sediment from the pool is set to begin next month. It is part of a wider £48m project to upgrade the sewer network and create additional stormwater storage in the area.
Removing sediment from the pool will play a role in improving the health of the pool by enhancing water quality and in turn protecting the wildlife that depends on it.
Maria Fletcher, County Business Lead for Wastewater in Cheshire, said: “Improving the water quality in Moor Pool will support a thriving local ecosystem, enhance the health of the water environment and help ensure the pool remains a valuable natural asset for both wildlife and the local community for many years to come.”
In preparation for the sediment removal, specialist health checks were carried out on the fish in Moor Pool before they were carefully rehomed in Peover. A second fish rehoming will be undertaken before the works begin.
On completion of the works, the fish will naturally repopulate Moor Pool via its connection with Middle Pool.
Sediment will be removed from the bottom of the pool using machinery on a floating pontoon. The silt will then be transported in sealed wagons and taken to a licensed processing facility.
During the work, construction vehicles will use a one-way system to move to and from the pool and
temporary changes to pedestrian walkways will be introduced to enable a work compound area to be created. Access to the children’s play area will be maintained.
Maria Fletcher added: “We understand that construction activity can be inconvenient and we are doing all we can to minimise disruption and reduce any impact on the community, the environment, wildlife and park users.
“We really appreciate everyone’s patience while this important work takes place.”
Work is also continuing to install a 1.8km stormwater storage tunnel 20m underground between the water company’s pumping station at Moor Pool, and its wastewater treatment works in Knutsford.
A customer information session about the sediment removal works is being held from 4.30 – 7pm on Tuesday 25th August at the Scout Hut located on the Moor.
