Improving the sewer network in your community
We understand how upsetting sewer flooding can be, the distress and inconvenience it causes to those affected and the impact it can have on the environment. You may notice our teams working in the village as we carry out improvements on the sewer network to help address sewer flooding in Burneside.
Why are we carrying out this work?
During periods of heavy rainfall, the existing sewer network in Burneside reaches capacity which has caused sewer flooding in the village and also impacted the River Kent.
What will our work involve?
- The project will be carried out in phases and involves:
- Replacing around 820 metres of new larger diameter sewer pipes along Burneside Road, Junction Cottages and Steels Row.
- Increasing the size of existing manholes.
- Reconnecting the existing pipes from properties into the new sewer.
- Constructing a new pumping station with storage capacity.
We’ll have a site compound located in land off Junction Cottages to store equipment and provide offices and welfare facilities for our team. We expect the project will be completed in Summer 2027.
How this may affect you
- Traffic management: We know roadworks are never welcome. Please be assured that we’ll do all we can to maintain as much access as possible for residents, pedestrians and businesses. For safety, there will be temporary road closures and traffic control as we progress through the project with signed diversions in place. Programme information can be found on the project website.
- Construction activity: We understand construction work can be inconvenient. We’ll be using machinery to install the new sewer and pumping station which will create noise and vibrations. This will be closely monitored and measures in place to reduce disruption wherever possible. There will be an increase in construction related vehicles around the village as we carry out the work. For safety, temporary diversions to the Public Right of Way footpath may also be required as we work to construct the new pumping station.
- Wash, flush... carry on as normal: Don’t worry, while we’re carrying out the sewer improvements you can continue to use all your appliances or facilities that take away the used water from your home or business as normal.
