Frequently asked questions

  • Most projects on streets like yours take a few weeks. The exact duration depends on pipe length and ground conditions and the amount of service pipes to reconnect. We’ll always aim to finish as quickly and safely as possible, while keeping disruption to a minimum.

  • Many water pipes are decades old. Replacing them now helps prevent leaks and bursts, improving reliability and reducing future disruption. It is being done as part of our Big North West Upgrade, which will see more than 925 kilometres (574 miles) of water pipes replaced across the region over the next four years.

  • Yes, wherever possible. If access needs to be temporarily restricted depending on where the existing service connections are and also for your safety, we’ll let you know in advance and minimise the inconvenience.

  • There may be temporary restrictions near the work area. We’ll clearly signpost changes and provide notice so you can plan ahead. We’ll contact you in advance if we need you to move your car for a short period.

  • We’ll reinstate all affected areas using existing or new materials. New surfaces may initially look different, but this will improve over time. Any grassed areas that we need to dig up will be reseeded as part of our clean up and may take longer to establish.

  • Before work starts, we’ll write to you so you know when to expect us.

In most cases, we can still carry out the pipe upgrade even if no one is at home when the work begins.

  • Our onsite team is always happy to help and can answer most questions about the work we are doing in your road.
