Is your water bill higher than expected?

If you’ve noticed an increase in your water bill, don’t worry. There are a few common reasons why this can happen, from simple changes in how you are using water in the home to those sneaky leaks that are harder to spot. We’ve explained more below.

Since receiving your previous bill, have our charges increased?

If so, this may be the reason for your bill being higher than expected. Our prices are updated each year on 1st April, which means your bill may have increased if it covers a period of time after this date. For details about our current charges please check here.

Has your water use changed?

Sometimes, small changes at home can have a bigger impact on your bill than you might expect. For example:

  • More people have been living or staying in your home than usual
  • You’ve recently carried out home improvements or renovations
  • Your circumstances have changed which means you’re using more water than before
  • You have recently moved home

Were your previous bills estimated?

If your previous bills were based on estimated meter readings, and your latest bill is based on an actual meter reading, your bill may be higher than usual.

Estimated readings are our best guess of how much water you've used. Sometimes these estimates can be lower than your actual usage. When we receive an actual meter reading, we can see exactly how much water has been used and update your account accordingly.

If you've used more water than was estimated, your latest bill will include the difference so that you're paying for the water you've actually used. This can make your bill appear higher, but it brings your account up to date and ensures future bills are based on accurate usage.

To help avoid unexpected bills, we recommend providing regular meter readings if you're able to do so. You can do this using or app or on our website.

Check for hidden leaks

Even small leaks can waste a lot of water over time and cause your bill to rise without you noticing.

Some common signs of a leak include:

  • A toilet that continues to run water into the bowl after flushing
  • Dripping taps
  • Leaking hoses behind washing machines and dishwashers
  • Damp patches in your home or garden

It’s easy to check for leaks in your home, find more details here.
