Helping residents this winter

As temperatures drop, winter brings additional challenges to our region’s water resources, and sub-zero temperatures can cause water pipes to crack or burst - causing damage to homes and businesses.

Key messages

Here are the simple steps you can take to prepare for winter and avoid frozen and burst water pipes:

  • Find your stop tap, so you can turn your water off in an emergency.
  • Insulate water pipes with lagging in cold places like the loft, garage and outside areas - you can buy lagging from DIY stores.
  • Cover outdoor taps with an insulated tap cover - remember to disconnect hoses so fittings don’t freeze!
  • Going away? Keep the heating on low or on a frost setting.
  • Allow heat circulation by opening cupboard doors which have water pipes inside.
