Sewer improvement work in Burneside

We've started work to upgrade the sewer network in the village by increasing the size of sewer pipes along Burneside Road, Junction Cottages and Steels Row. We'll also be constructing a new pumping station with storage capacity to help reduce the occurrence of localised sewer flooding within the village.

The work began in April 2025 and will be carried out in phases. We expect all activity will be completed in summer 2027.

We understand that construction activity and road closures can be disruptive and our site team will do all they can to minimise inconvenience to the village community and road users throughout our work.

    • Creating temporary site compounds.
    • Replacing around 820 metres of sewer to install new larger diameter pipes.
    • Increasing the size of existing manholes.
    • Reconnecting the existing pipes from properties into the new sewer.
    • Installing a new pumping station with storage capacity.

  • We really appreciate your patience and understanding. For safety, there will be temporary road closures in place during the phases of work when we're installing the new sewers along Burneside Road, Junction Cottages and Steels Row. There will also be temporary traffic management (traffic lights) for some elements of our work. The bus stop near Sprint Holme will be temporarily closed.

The overview map indicates our phases of work in Burneside.

We'll do all we can to maintain as much safe access as possible for residents, pedestrians and businesses. As we build the new pumping station on Burneside Road, near Carlingdale, there will be temporary Public Right of Way diversions in place.

Our delivery partner has provided outline timeframes* for each phase of traffic management activity. This may be subject to change and will be updated as our programme progresses.

    Phase Location Details *Proposed dates
1 Burneside Road Road closure 22 April to 28 May 2025
2 From the traffic lights on Burneside Road to the end of Junction Cottages. The first sections of activity will be carried out using traffic lights. A road closure will then be in place along Junction Cottages.  17 September 2025 to 16 January 2026
3 Steels Row Road closure 19 January to 10 March 2026

  • The type of equipment and machinery we need to use to install the new sewers can create temporary noise, dust or vibrations. This will be closely monitored and measures in place to reduce disruption wherever possible. There will be an increase in construction related vehicles around the village as we carry out the work.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  • We'll continue to keep the community updated as our project progresses.
