Improvements to the Vyrnwy Aqueduct

We’re making great progress on our Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme (VAMP). Since 1892, the Vyrnwy Aqueduct has helped deliver water to communities across Cheshire and Merseyside.

The aqueduct consists of three large pipelines (each measuring over one metre in diameter) and extend over 110km from Lake Vyrnwy in Wales through to Merseyside.

A previous project completed work to modernise the section between Oswestry and Malpas, along with a continuing programme of improvements at our water treatment works. This programme involves modernising the remaining sections between Malpas in Cheshire through to Merseyside. upgrading 139km of pipes that carry 210million litres of drinking water a day to a million customers across Cheshire and Merseyside.

The project started in 2020 and is due to complete by 2028.

What will the work involve?

We’re using different and innovative methods to modernise the aqueduct. We understand this is a large construction project and our teams will do all they can to minimise disruption. There may be temporary traffic management required to carry out the work. Click here for further details about our current traffic management.
