Improving water quality in Troutbeck – helping to protect Windermere

We’re committed to improving the health of Windermere with a multi-million pound programme of upgrades which will improve treatment standards to further reduce phosphorus entering the lake and create more storm water storage capacity to help reduce spills.

What’s happening at Troutbeck?

  • We are proposing to install a new innovative chemical-free sewage treatment called FuijClean which comes from Japan.
  • The compact, modular system treats wastewater effectively using a low amount of energy.
  • This upgrade will improve treatment standards here at Troutbeck and further reduce phosphorus entering the lake. We have undertaken some enabling works to prepare for the permanent solution and installed a smaller FujiClean unit at our works to improve current treatment standards prior to the main upgrade.
  • The smaller unit will remain on site until the larger permanent units, starting in Summer 2025. On completion of our works, the site will be re-landscaped and new screening installed.
