Re‑introducing nature into school playgrounds to manage the rain

We’re transforming grey playgrounds across Greater Manchester into green spaces with rainwater planters and raingardens that manage the rain, support wildlife and create new opportunities for children to learn outdoors.

Across Greater Manchester, schools are seeing their grey playgrounds transformed into vibrant green spaces that manage rainfall where it falls. Rainwater planters help to slow the flow and reduce water entering the sewer network, while creating wildlife‑friendly pockets across school grounds. This clever rainwater storage provides a place for plants to grow and a habitat for bees and butterflies. It also creates a living educational space, giving children the chance to explore, get hands‑on and bring to life teachings about the water cycle.
