Our improvements at Lancaster Wastewater Treatment Works

Helping to improve water quality along the Sefton coast.

We’re investing £50 million to carry out a range of activities and upgrade Southport Wastewater Treatment Works, once completed these upgrades will further improve the sites efficiency and allow it to treat wastewater to even higher standards.

The upgrades will play a key role in enhancing water quality along the Sefton Coast by reducing the number of times that storm overflows operate during heavy rain. We expect the work will be completed in summer 2029.

What will the work involve?

The upgrade work will take place in phases.

Phase 1

Focusing on the construction of a new 4,500m3 stormwater storage tank – the equivalent of just under two and half Olympic sized swimming pools (30,000 bath tubs).

May 2025 – March 2026*

  • Removal of redundant apparatus
  • Preliminary groundworks and site set up
  • Construction of a new storm water storage tank

Phase 2

The second phase will increase the site’s ability to treat more wastewater and to even higher standards.

Early 2026 –Summer 2029*

  • Removal of redundant apparatus
  • Construction of new operationalassets

*Programme timeline and construction activity may be subject to change
