Building a stronger, greener and healthier Chorley
Helping to improve water quality in the River Yarrow. We're committed to playing our part in improving the health of rivers and waterbodies across the North West. As part of our Action Plan for Lancashire, we’re carrying out several projects in Chorley which will help to improve water quality in the Rivers Yarrow and Ribble.
What will the work involve?
The £10 million investment involves the construction of two new underground storm water storage tanks in land next to Southlands High School, Chorley.
The tanks will have a combined capacity of more than 3.6 million litres of water – that’s almost the equivalent of one and half Olympic-sized swimming pools. The additional storage will help to reduce storm overflows into the River Yarrow which flows into the River Ribble.
There will be a temporary road closure on Butterworth Brow and Clover Road when we’re at the stage of our programme to connect the new tanks into the existing sewer network. This will be planned during the school summer holiday period to help minimise disruption. Construction activity is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
