Improving the sewer network in Knutsford
We’re carrying out several upgrade and improvement projects in Knutsford, which, on completion, will provide additional storage on the sewer network and environmental improvements.
What will the work involve?
Just two of the projects we’re carrying out in Knutsford.
Increasing capacity on the sewer network
We’re constructing a new underground 1.8km storage tunnel between our existing Moor pumping station and Knutsford Wastewater Treatment Works. The tunnel will hold storm water flows during periods of heavy rain, before releasing it through to our Knutsford treatment site. At the deepest point, the specialist machine will be tunnelling almost twenty metres below ground! We expect the work will be completed in spring 2027.
Improving water quality in Moor Pool
Moor Pool is part of the Tatton Mere’s system, which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and an internationally recognised wetland network.
We’re working in partnership with Natural England, the Environment Agency and Tatton Estates to remove sediment from Moor Pool and help to restore the pool’s health, improve water quality and protect the wildlife that depends on it. Before any work begins we’ll be working with a specialist contractor to carry out fish health checks and rescue. This work is expected to take place in early 2026. The sediment removal work is expected to take place in autumn/winter 2026.
