Our improvements at Lancaster Wastewater Treatment Works

Helping to improve water quality in the River Lune and Morecambe Bay.

We’re carrying out a £48 million upgrade which will further improve the sites efficiency and create additional storm water capacity.

What will the work involve?

This programme of upgrade activity will further improve the sites efficiency and create additional storm water capacity to help play a vital role in protecting the Morecambe Bay coastline.

We’re removing three existing storm tanks at the site and constructing new modern high-capacity structures.  Elements of the demolished tanks will be recycled and re-used in the construction to support the projects low-carbon approach. Once completed the upgrade will help to increase the amount of storm water storage during periods of heavy rainfall, before returning it for full treatment.

Alongside the storm upgrades, as part of our bioresources strategy, we’re also upgrading the sites sludge treatment process.  The upgrades are expected to be completed by spring 2029.
