Building a stronger, greener and healthier Blackburn

Helping to improve water quality in the River Blakewater

We’re working in land off Philips Road and Percliff Way to construct a new underground storm water storage tank. A tank was constructed nearby in 2012, this additional tank will provide extra capacity on the sewer network and help to temporarily hold water and reduce the frequency of storm overflows operating during periods of heavy rainfall.

What will the work involve?

The new underground storm water storage tank will be 30 metres deep and 30 metres wide and capable of holding 12.5 million litres of water. Both tanks will be connected by an underground tunnel and, once all construction activity is completed in 2027, both tanks will store 15 million litres of storm water – the equivalent of six Olympic sized swimming pools.
