Building a stronger, greener and healthier Eccles

We're upgrading Eccles Wastewater Treatment Works to provide additional storage and install new equipment to enhance the treatment process, which will improve the quality of water returned to Salteye Brook and the Manchester Ship Canal. The upgrade involves constructing a new 60,000m3 storage tank (equivalent to 24 Olympic sized swimming pools),and installing new equipment.

Additional work is currently underway to install a new underground storage tank next to the M60 (J11), off Liverpool Road with further work being planned to increase the capacity of sewer pipes along Peel Green Road to help reduce the risk of sewer flooding. Over the period 2025 - 2030 we're investing over £525 million to improve river water quality throughout the city.
