Our improvements at Bolton Wastewater Treatment Works

We have invested £110 million at Bolton Wastewater Treatment Works, making major enhancements to the treatment process and providing extra capacity within the site, allowing us to treat higher volumes of wastewater and reduce storm overflow into the River Irwell.

We have installed innovative technology and equipment to treat the used water to higher standards and relocated a storm outfall and pipeline. Environmental benefits were achieved in spring 2025 with full project completion expected spring 2026. We're also investing to improve asset resilience at both Bury and Rossendale Wastewater Treatment Works, which will contribute to improving water quality in the wider Irwell Valley Catchment.
