Building a stronger, greener and healthier Blackburn

Blackburn Wastewater Treatment Works treats over 168 million litres of sewage each year. We're removing outdated equipment and building new technology infrastructure to convert treated sewage bi-products into renewable green energy.

The £170 million upgrade is being carried out in phases and is expected to be completed in summer 2029. Work is currently taking place to demolish 31 outdated processing structures and a planning application is being prepared to deliver new compact, efficient and environmentally considerate structures within the existing site footprint. The treatment site will continue to operate as normal throughout the work with the main construction activity expected to begin in summer 2026.
