We’re making some temporary changes to your drinking water

You may have noticed that current river levels are lower than usual for this time of year - according to the weather records, it's the driest start to a year in the North West since the 1950's. To help us manage water resources in the Lancashire area and protect the local environment as we head into the summer period, we’re making some temporary changes to the way we bring water to you.

The water blend across some parts of Lancashire will temporarily change from moderately soft to moderately hard/hard over the spring and summer months. You do not need to do anything and there will be no interruption to your supply. Your water will remain safe and meet all water quality standards. At the bottom of this page there is a tool to enter your post code to get the latest water quality report for your area.

  • Some of your water comes from local river sources which we then treat, so it’s clean and safe before distributing along our network of pipes to your homes and businesses. You may have noticed that current river levels are lower than usual for this time of year. Throughout the spring and summer months we will need to make temporary changes to meet the restrictions on the volume of water we can legally take from rivers to help protect the environment.

To meet water demand in your area during this time, we need to reduce the amount of river water and increase the amount of groundwater in your usual blend. While you already receive some groundwater in your current water supply, this will increase to help protect your local rivers throughout the spring and summer period.

We will reverse the changes back to your usual water blend as soon as river levels improve to a sustainable level.

  • The change will mean that your water will temporarily change from moderately soft to moderately hard/hard as the alternative treatment site processes water which has a higher naturally occurring mineral content.

    Temporary Supply Change

You do not need to do anything and there will be no interruption to your supply. We’ll make the change gradually within your area and you may notice your water may be slightly different than what you may be used to.

When changing the supply of your water, the presence of calcium, magnesium and other naturally occurring minerals within the water chemistry determine the levels of hardness you receive, ranging from soft to very hard. Whatever the source or treatment works, the drinking water we supply is treated and monitored from source through to taps, ensuring it's clean and safe for humans and pets to drink, meeting strict water quality standards – monitored by the Drinking Water Inspectorate.
