Buerton and Audlem sewer improvements

Once the used water from showers and toilets goes down the drain, our job begins to help transport it along a huge network of sewer pipes to one of over 560 treatment works, before it's clean enough to return to the natural environment.

To help the network operate more efficiently and allow us to treat the used water from growing communities, we're proposing to reduce the facilities at Buerton and install a new sewer pipeline which will transfer the wastewater through to our Audlem site.

We'll need to install new equipment at both sites and some elements of work will require permission from the local authority.

Thank you for your feedback on our plans

We would usually arrange local community drop-in sessions before we submit our applications, so the project team can talk through our plans and answer any queries.

As we continue to do all we can to keep our team and the community safe and help reduce Covid-19 transmission, we developed information online. To provide the opportunity to submit any queries or comments we included a feedback form.

If you took the time to complete our feedback form, thank you.  We have submitted our planning applications for the proposed work at the treatment works  and will continue to keep the community updated as we work to develop our plans to confirm the new pipeline route.

  • What would the improvement work at Buerton involve?

Our plans include closing the existing site and building a pumping station. The new pumping station would be located on land next to the site, and a new access route created. The overview map. and a more detailed construction drawing provide information about our proposed work.

Access would continue from the current route along Festival Avenue during the construction period. Our plans also include tree and shrub landscaping around the new pumping station on completion of the proposed work.

A new underground sewer pipeline would be installed to transfer flows through to Audlem Wastewater Treatment Works. We're carrying out surveys and investigations to determine the most appropriate route for the pipeline and will update this information as soon as plans are available.

Additional land purchase: Due to the location of existing pipework, the new pumping station will need to be located outside of our existing site boundary, so we'll need to purchase the additional piece of land.

Temporary compound area: During the construction period we would need to create a temporary compound to accommodate our team, materials and construction equipment.

  • What would the improvement work at Audlem involve?

Our plans to improve the site include building new tanks and associated treatment control equipment.  The site boundary would need to expand to accommodate the new structures. Our overview map and more detailed construction drawing have further information about our proposed work.

We'll continue to use the existing site access off Whitchurch Road next to Weaver View during the construction period and our plans include tree and shrub landscaping around the new equipment on completion of the proposed improvement work.

A new underground sewer pipeline would be installed from Buerton Wastewater Treatment Works to transfer flows through to Audlem for treatment. We're carrying out surveys and investigations to determine the most appropriate route for the pipeline and will update this information as soon as plans are available.

Additional land purchase: The area for the proposed new equipment falls outside our existing site boundary, so we'll need to purchase the additional area of land.

Temporary compound area: During the construction period we would need to create a temporary compound to accommodate our team, materials and construction equipment.

  • We understand that construction work can be inconvenient and our teams would ensure we keep the communities around both of our sites updated as our plans progress.

Construction activity: This type of work will require the use of machinery which will create noise and vibrations. There will be additional traffic on the local road network as we receive deliveries. An integral part of our planning includes the development of a traffic management plan to ensure disruption to the local community and road network is minimised as much as possible.

Wash, flush…carry on as normal: Don’t worry, you will still be able to use all your existing appliances or facilities that take away the used water from your home or business just as you usually would while the work is carried out.

    • We have submitted our applications to the local authority for elements of work where planning permission is required.
    • Once the planning application decision is made, we would continue to keep the community updated throughout the proposed construction period. We're hoping to begin the improvement work in 2022 and expect it would take around 20 months. Work to install the new sewer pipeline would begin in summer 2022.

  • We're making improvements to the sewer network in Buerton and Audlem but problems in the sewers can often be caused by flushing wet wipes down the loo or pouring fats, oils and grease down the sink.
