St Helens waterways set to improve

24 Feb 2026

Overview

A combined investment of £10 million on two storm tank projects will increase storm water capacity and improve river water quality in St Helens.

Solution

Taking place in Hawes Avenue and Gaskell Street, the new underground storage tanks help to reduce the number of times the storm overflow operates.

Outcome

As part of the Big North West Upgrade, to make the North West stronger, greener and healthier, the storm water tanks will improve water quality in local waterways Black Brook and Sutton Brook.
