Oldham project duo will improve quality of the River Irk
Overview
We have completed a project in Oldham to stop a storm overflow from operating into the River Irk. The project has allowed for capacity in the existing wastewater network to carry flows to be treated at Oldham wastewater treatment works, instead of entering the river at an earlier point during periods of heavy rain.
We have also secured planning permission for a wider programme of works to improve the wastewater network and make changes to the Sheepfoot Lane storm overflow.
Solution
At Sheepfoot Lane we will increase sewer capacity in the town and reduce the number of times that a second the storm overflow operates as well as creating a new outfall at Plumpton Clough.
The work will take around 18 months to complete and we are working closely with local stakeholder to mitigate the disruption.
Outcome
This project is being delivered as part of our Big North West Upgrade to make the northwest stronger, greener and healthier.
