Think before you pour

Pouring cooking oil and fats down the drain can cause blockages and sewer flooding to your home and garden. 

But it doesn’t stop there. Fats, oils and grease (FOG) can create what is known as a ‘fatberg’ (a congealed mess of fats, oils and other ’unflushables’) which can clog up the main sewer pipes under the street that take your used water away. 

Every year there are 25,000 blockages in sewers across the North West, blockages can cause untreated sewage to run into homes, gardens, streets and even end up in rivers, the sea and on beaches which could be avoided if FOG was disposed of correctly. 

Please help - think before you pour and you'll play a key part in helping to reduce blocked drains and sewer flooding and also avoid costly blocked drains in your own home.

Allow oils and fats to cool after cooking and scrape them in to the bin. Never pour them down the sink as even small amounts can cause problems.

Get a strainer
Use a strainer to catch any bits and pieces of food in your sink

If you have a large quantity of used oil and fats contact your local Council for advice.
