Why has my Direct Debit increased?

There could be a number of reasons why your Direct Debit is higher than expected.

If you don’t have a water meter the increase is likely to be because:

  • you have recently moved home and the yearly charge is higher at your new address
  • a payment you have made may not have been allocated to your account
  • you previously had a credit on your account which has now been used up
  • you reduced your instalment amounts for your Direct Debit and they have been increased to cover the outstanding charges

If your home has a water meter the increase is likely to be due to:

  • visitors coming to stay or a new baby in the family
  • new appliances in your home using more water. For example, a power shower uses twice as much water as a normal shower
  • members of the household using more water than you think, such as more showers or baths
  • regular use of a hose or sprinkler in your garden
  • previously estimated bills, which have been superseded by a reading
  • a balance brought forward from a previous bill, or your previous bill may have had a credit on it which has been used up
  • the amount of your payment plan may not have been enough to cover your bill

Also, if you’ve recently moved home, your bill could cover a longer period than usual, or you have moved from a property where the charges were based on a low Rateable Value to a property with a meter where your charges are based on the amount of water you use.

If none of the above apply to you, there could be a leak on your internal pipework or appliances. The most common leaks include:

  • water lost from constantly flowing faulty toilet cisterns or appliances
  • dripping taps and pipes
