Dearham sewer improvements
Thank you for your continued patience as we have several teams working in different locations around the village to install new sewer pipes and construct a new underground storm water storage tank. We're carrying out the work in phases and expect to have all construction work completed in late summer 2021. We'll then finish off by returning the areas where we've worked back to normal.
Progress update: 15 June 2021
Phase one is now complete
Phase two: Central Road (West): This section is now complete.
Main Street: The team expect to complete this section in mid-August 2021.
Craika Road: We expect to have installed this section of new sewer by the end of July.
Phase three: Work on Central Road (East) is in progress with a full road closure in place until mid-July. The team will then need temporary traffic lights for a further two weeks to complete this section of work.
We really do understand this work is inconvenient for residents and the community. Thank you for your continued patience.
Dearham Primary School: An earlier part of the project impacted on the schools grounds, so the project team worked with the school to help develop a new recreational area for the children to enjoy. Daisy, a pupil in year 6 was chosen as creating the winning design which includes a seating area, raised garden planters, a storage shed and even a vegetable patch! We hope the children enjoy this beautiful new space.
What will our work involve?
We’re extending the wastewater treatment works site, so we can construct a new underground storm water holding tank.
Work will also take place in phases to increase the size, replace, and in some areas of the village install new sections of sewer pipe. We’ll be working in Craika Road, Maryport Road, Central Road, Pottery Lane, Greenlands Road, Browside Road, Main Street, The Went, Church Street, St Mungo’s Close and Wilsons Farm Close.
The overview map illustrates the phasing and expected duration for each stage of work.
How this may affect you
Don’t worry, you can still use all your water services just as you usually would while we’re carrying out the work.
Roadworks and traffic management
We’ll need to dig a trench along the pipe route, so that we can lay the new sections of pipe. We know that roadworks are never welcome. The team will make sure the local community are kept updated as the work progresses.
So that the work can be completely safely, we’ll need to use some traffic management and have temporary road closures in place. There will also be some temporary disruption to footpaths.
We do understand that at times access may be difficult and we’ll continue to keep this page updated to let you know of any changes to the programme. We’ll need to close the full width of the road section we're working in, however, our site team will try to maintain as much access as possible to homes and businesses and we'll be in touch with those properties who will be directly affected. We’ll have signage in place to help direct you around our working areas.
Noise and vibration
This type of work will require the use of machinery which will create noise and vibrations. We’ll do all we can to minimise disruption to the local community and road users. Thanks for your patience and co-operation, our site team will be happy to help if you have any queries while we’re carrying out this work to help reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Dearham.

Help to Stop the Block
We're making improvements to the sewer network in Dearham, but problems can often be caused by flushing wet wipes down the loo or pouring fats, oils and grease down the sink. To find out more about what you can do to help Stop the Block, take a look at the information and advice.
Want to know more, or have a query?
In the current circumstances we've taken the decision not to open the customer centre. We'll update the community when we feel it's appropriate to open the facility, so you can drop-in and speak to the team.

All of our work takes place in the road or within areas of land which are indicated on the map, we'll never ask to come into your home. However, while we're working to improve the sewer network in the village, we may call to your property to explain more about our work and how it may impact you if there will be road closures that would prevent access to your home. Please remember that all our team carry identification badges. We really won't mind if you want to call us on 0345 672 3723 to check.
