Did you know, every time you let the kitchen tap run when you don't need to, you can waste a litre of water every six or seven seconds?

It's easy to use water wisely in the kitchen.  Here are some top tips:

Top tips for the kitchen:

  • Plug the sink or use a bowl to wash dishes
  • Rinse vegetables in a bowl
  • Run washing machines and dishwashers with a full load
  • Don't over fill the kettle, it will save electricty too
  • Turn off taps fully
  • Store drinking water in the fridge instead of running the water until it is cold
  • Defrost meat by putting it in the fridge or microwave, don't run it under the tap

Where is your internal stop tap?

It's a good idea to know where your stop tap is, so that you can turn off the water if a pipe leaks or bursts, or when you go away on holiday. The most likely places to find it are under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs toilet, or in the garage if this is built on to the house.
