Within United Utilities we have a proactive approach to health and safety management, with some of our businesses at the leading edge of company initiatives. We work closely with employees, enforcement agencies, regulators, customers, partners and other stakeholders to develop and promote health and safety and effectively manage our risks. We view this not only as responsible management, but also a commercial opportunity.

As an organisation, we recognise our responsibilities for health and safety and the necessity for effective leadership. More than this, health and safety is an integral aspect of the way we manage our business and is fundamental to our corporate beliefs, values and culture, forming an essential aspect of our corporate responsibility agenda. Our health and safety standards and achievements maximise business performance and enhance our reputation in the marketplace.

We are committed to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of our employees, our contractors, visitors, members of the public and our customers where they may be affected by our activities. This is a significant business challenge with a UK workforce of over 8,000. We have activities that include management of multi-million pound capital investment programmes, supply of utility infrastructure services and international partnerships, call centre operations, water/wastewater treatment plants, gas supply operations, electricity supply operations and large-scale construction sites. Our range of potential impacts is far reaching.

We will achieve our committments through the implementation of health and safety management systems, together with our group strategic and policy objectives. We will continue to build upon our past achievements and recognition reinforcing our commitment to performance review and continual improvement.

The United Utilities executive leadership team (ELT) is committed to the management of health and safety within our organisation and as such is committed to the implementation of our strategy. The ELT, through the group heads of health and safety and business health and safety functions, promote and monitor this strategy. The group and business line management chain will be responsible for its implementation. We will monitor, review and compare our performance on a regular basis and report both internally and externally to our stakeholders.
