Fat, oil and grease, nappies and razor blades are just some of the things we throw away down the kitchen sink or toilet causing blocked sewers and flooding.
Many of us do this assuming that these items are simply flushed away but as they enter the sewers, fat quickly hardens while other materials get caught in it, causing a blockage.
The blockage prevents sewage from flowing along the pipe and the build up eventually spills out where it can. The result is sewer flooding and can pollute local rivers and streams.
It often reaches homes too and for those affected the impact can be extremely distressing.
Instead of disposing of items down the kitchen sink or toilet, simply put it in a bag and throw it in the bin. For further information, see our What Not To Flush leaflet.
Keeping household waste out of the sewer network also reduces the risk of your own drains being blocked, which is a very unpleasant and expensive experience.
