Reducing leaks and bursts in Crewe

One of our large water pipes that runs between Acton Road and Lockitt Street in Crewe, has burst several times in recent years resulting in significant disruption to many of our customers. To reduce the risk of further bursts and leaks, we're shortly going to start work renewing the pipe.

We will use a technique called 'slip-lining', this involves inserting a new, smaller water pipe into the existing one. This method is less disruptive than more traditional ones because it means that we don't need to dig long trenches in the road. However, to get the new pipe into the old one we will have to dig two holes.  The new pipe will be fed through the hole into the existing pipe at one end, and pulled through the pipe from the hole at the other end. .

Due to the location of the holes in the road it is likely that there will be some disruption to existing parking arrangements in the immediate vicinity of our work.  As we work along the route of the existing pipe we will write to customers in the streets directly affected with details of any road closures, diversions or restricted access arrangements.

Work started on Acton Road in early July 2009, and proceeded towards Lockitt Street via the route shown here
