During 2006/07 we generated over one million tonnes of waste, managing to recycle 75%. Our wastes range from process sludges created in the treatment of water and wastewater, through construction waste and excavated materials to general office waste.

Recycling routes include using wastewater sludge as an agricultural fertiliser, using water sludge in brick manufacture and processing excavated material so it can be put back into the trenches we dig during network maintenance.

We have recently signed off a high level waste and resource use policy that sets the direction for how we want to manage our wastes in the future. Through implementing the principles behind this policy we will dispose of our waste in a more sustainable manner and gain more value from our wastes in the process.
